Urban Planning concept
The 3-D building site forms the northernmost part of the "Nordbahnhof " development area.
At the intersection of Taborstraße, Nordbahnstraße and Dresdner Straße, the urban axes are incorporated into the building site and diverted by 2 building clusters. This creates two squares that form a joint and ensure the transition from the more frequented street space to the higher, more private open space.
The buildings reflect the urban context as a condensed hybrid form.
The new buildings reflect the existing horizons and generate a similar sequence in their facade length with the mainhorizons of the 35m points and from the "founding period" era buildings opposite, which are approx. 20m high, in order to mediate to the adjacent 80m high-rise in the South.
The existing level difference between the street and the railway track of approx. 3m, is used to ensure a three-dimensional seperation between paved and green areas. Green terraces with staircases and seating steps are being created, which create various entrances and views to the upper level. The two squares expand the street space and provide an entrance for the buildings and commercial units. A semi-public green area is being created at railway level, which offers communal ares and paly areas for residents. A courtyard closed on three sides becomes a protected open space for the kindergarten.
Architectural concept
The two buildings are accentuaded by high points and shaped three-dimensionally. The facade design is intended to generate buildings that are attractive on all sides and can be read as a single unit despite the difference in height.
The base area of the buildings is used multifunctionally with commercial units on the street and spacious bicycle and storage rooms in the buried area. There is a kindergarten and a home on the first floor. The two-story base stands out from the parts of the building above its calm, bright character and is characterized by facade greenery.
The plastered facades of the residential floors above, are dominated by earthy colors, which are additionally structured by a linear structure. The three-dimensional building structure and the arrangement of the windows and offset balconies, create a lively and airy facade. The shape of the balconies reflects the pentagonal building structures and their arrangement creates varied facades.
